Why use metal over plastic?

Designing a product? If you're thinking about manufacturing with metal instead of plastic, think about these 5 great reasons why metal might be a better choice for you:
  • You need strength. Metal is a stronger material than plastic.
  • You need accuracy. Metal can stand up to warping more than plastic. For example, metal sheave gauges last much longer than plastic ones.
  • You need heat and UV resistance. Will your product need to withstand high temperatures without melting or warping? Metal may be your best option.
  • You need your product to look more expensive. Metal simply looks more pricey than plastic. Customers perceive it as better quality and durability.
  • You need good conductivity. Metal is a natural conductor.

If these factors matter for your production, consider metal over plastic.

Crane and rigging training institutes: give away metal sheave gauges for less than $10 per set

8/1/2016

Crane and rigging training institutes can now provide trainees with durable, long-lasting sheave gauges as giveaways at a fraction of the cost competitors charge.

Our most popular sheave gauge - called our Special Group I (1/4" - 1-1/2") - sells for less than $10 each at high volume quantities (1,000+). That's about 10% of the price of any durable metal sheave gauge you can find in North America. (Even for 1 gauge, you'd pay about 25% of the price competitors charge for metal sheave gauges.) Add imprinting so your trainees can more easily remember you or send clients your way, and it's just a bit more per set.

How we keep our prices low for you
We stamp our metal sheave gauges - giving you the same precision as a laser cut option but more durability than plastic options.

Don't just take our word for it. Get a sample or see our prices.

How to determine the amount of wear using a sheave gauge

8/12/2015

Picture
Use a sheave gauge to regularly check sheave grooves for wear, which may slow or block a wire rope:
  1. Place the proper size gauge in the sheave.
  2. Shine a light behind the gauge.
  3. Check for light between the gauge and the root of the groove. If you detect light, replace or re-tool the sheave.

How to accurately measure wire rope wear

8/5/2015

For an ACCURATE wire rope diameter measurement to determine if you should retire the wire rope, use a machinist’s caliper or micrometer. To properly use a caliper to assure accurate measurement:
  1. Note the wire rope diameter, a circumscribed circle that encloses all of the wire rope strands.
  2. Measure the diameter at the widest points, from the top of one strand to the top of the directly opposite strand. (Measuring two strands side by side will give an inaccurate diameter reading.)
