Primarily due to the increased use of coated abrasives in the electronics industry and despite decreasing demand for natural grain-based coated abrasives, experts predict a compounded annual growth rate of nearly seven percent by 2019.

In TechNavio's brand new study, experts analyze trends in the coated abrasives industry from 2015-2019.
"The report provides data on the different segments of the market, which are based on the following criteria:
- Applications (including consumer goods sector, machinery sector, metal fabrication sector, transportation sector, and other applications such as construction and woodworking)
- Backing material types (including cloth, cotton, fiber, paper, polyester, and others such as films)
- Coat types (including closed, open, and others coat such as semi-open coat)
- Grain types (including aluminum oxide, alumina zirconia, ceramic, silicon carbide, and others)
- Form (including belts, discs, sheets and rolls, wheels, and others such as polygons and strips)
- Geography (including APAC, Europe, North America, and ROW)."

In hardware venture capital firm Bolt's "How It's Made" series, engineer Avery Louie dissects how designers of Fitbit's Aria Smart Scale worked smarter. In a nutshell, product developers designed the scale in these clever ways:
  • Engineers mounted every component to the base plate, making testing easy.
  • Snaps mounted into the plastic base save costs. There are no other pieces required to mount wires.
  • Off-the-shelf parts also save costs. Engineers designed eletronic components without using custom parts, saving manufacturing dollars.

Resuable adapter kit
The bonded abrasives market is on an upswing, and here's why:
  1. A growing automobile industry. Car manufacturers use bonded abrasives for surface finishing.
  2. Increasing demand for advanced machinery and tools. Manufacturers finish machine shafts and machine blocks and remove rust using bonded abrasives.
  3. A growing medical sector. Dentists use bonded abrasives to sharpen and smooth their tools.

How to determine the amount of wear using a sheave gauge

Use a sheave gauge to regularly check sheave grooves for wear, which may slow or block a wire rope:
  1. Place the proper size gauge in the sheave.
  2. Shine a light behind the gauge.
  3. Check for light between the gauge and the root of the groove. If you detect light, replace or re-tool the sheave.

Greentown Labs and MassMEP help increase the number of manufacturing jobs in Massachusetts

Our friends over at Greentown Labs and Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP), a group that helps Massachusetts manufacturers grow, made headlines in the Boston Business Journal by teaming up to connect Massachusetts clean tech startups with local manufacturers. They're visiting manufacturing companies, hosting tours, and more.
"Many early-stage startup founders developing hardware products don't want to outsource jobs to places like China, but they don't know which local manufacturers are trusted and affordable.... We're seeing these startups leading the way on this. They don't want to go to China. They want to figure out how to do it here. It's a very exciting opportunity for startups in the Boston area to be a vanguard of that trend."
- Greentown Labs CEO and Executive Director Emily Reichert
In about six months, startups will have the option to search a database for local manufacturers and rate us. The goals:
  • Help startups become more knowledgeable.
  • Get more business for local manufacturers.
  • Expose local manufacturers to more technologies.
  • Bring more manufacturing jobs back to Massachusetts.

How to accurately measure wire rope wear

8/5/2015

For an ACCURATE wire rope diameter measurement to determine if you should retire the wire rope, use a machinist’s caliper or micrometer. To properly use a caliper to assure accurate measurement:
  1. Note the wire rope diameter, a circumscribed circle that encloses all of the wire rope strands.
  2. Measure the diameter at the widest points, from the top of one strand to the top of the directly opposite strand. (Measuring two strands side by side will give an inaccurate diameter reading.)

The United States and China tighten the manufacturing cost gap

In yesterday's "The Rising Cost of Manufacturing" in The New York Times, analysts report that countries typically thought to produce goods cheaply - Russia, Taiwan, and China - now have costs pretty close to those in the United States.

While China's labor costs are still low, raw material and electricity costs exceed the same costs in the United States, making goods like yarn more expensive to produce in China than most other top exporters.

Check out the chart that shows how China's costs rose since 2004.
